In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Rust on Linux Mint 21. For those of you who didn’t know, Rust is a modern and fast programming language that is designed to be safe, concurrent, and practical. It is used for developing a wide range of applications, including web browsers, operating systems, and games. Additionally, its focus on safety and concurrency makes it an ideal choice for modern software development.
This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo
‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of Rust Programming Language on Linux Mint 21 (Vanessa).
Prerequisites
- A server running one of the following operating systems: Linux Mint 21 (Vanessa).
- It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
- SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
- An active internet connection. You’ll need an internet connection to download the necessary packages and dependencies for Rust.
- A
non-root sudo user
or access to theroot user
. We recommend acting as anon-root sudo user
, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.
Install Rust on Linux Mint 21 Vanessa
Step 1. Before running the tutorial below, it’s important to make sure your system is up to date by running the following apt
commands in the terminal:
sudo apt update sudo apt install software-properties-common apt-transport-https curl ca-certificates build-essential gcc make
Step 2. Installing Rust Programming Language on Linux Mint 21.
By default, Rust is not available on the Linux Mint 21 base repository. Now run the following command below to download the scripts to install the rust programing language to your Linux Mint system:
curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://sh.rustup.rs | sh
Step 3. Configuring the PATH Environment Variable.
Now run the following commands to activate the Rust environment:
source ~/.profile source ~/.cargo/env
To verify that Rust has been installed and started correctly, run the following command:
rustc -V
Step 4. Create Rust Sample Project Application.
mkdir ~/idroot-projects cd idroot-projects
After that, create a new rust file with the command below:
sudo nano hello.rs
Add the following lines:
fn main() { println!("Hello, World!"); }
Save and close the file, then compile the rust file with the command:
rustc hello.rs
Finally, run the application you created using Rust, run the program using the command below:
./hello
Congratulations! You have successfully installed Rust. Thanks for using this tutorial for installing the latest version of Rust Programming Language on the Linux Mint system. For additional help or useful information, we recommend you check the official Rust website.
