In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Composer on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. For those of you who didn’t know, Composer is an incredible dependency manager tool used to install and upgrade libraries for dynamic, PHP applications and projects. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt commands in the terminal.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Step 2. Installing dependencies packages.

Run the following commands to install the required dependencies at first:

sudo apt install php libapache2-mod-php php-mbstring php-xmlrpc php-soap php-gd php-xml php-cli php-zip curl

After the whole process is finished, check the version of PHP:

$ php -v

Step 3. Installing Composer on Ubuntu 20.04.

Now, We are downloading and installing the Composer with the following commands:

curl -sS https://getcomposer.org/installer | php

To make PHP Composer globally available, move it to the binary folder /usr/local/bin:

sudo mv composer.phar /usr/local/bin/composer
sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/composer
source ~/.bashrc

Finally, run the following commands if you want to verify the installed composer:

composer -v
