How To Install Pip on Debian 10 Buster

Install Pip on Debian 10 Buster

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Pip on Debian 10 Buster. Debian 10 Buster is a stable and reliable Linux distribution widely used by developers and system administrators. Python, a versatile and powerful programming language, is an essential tool for software development on Debian systems. Pip, the Python package installer, simplifies the process of installing and managing Python packages.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of Pip on a Debian 10 (Buster) server.

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Debian 10 (Buster).
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Pip on Debian 10 Buster

Step 1. To ensure a smooth installation process and maintain the security of your Debian system, it is crucial to update the system packages to their latest versions. Open a terminal and run the following commands:

apt update
apt upgrade

Step 2. Installing Pip on Debian 10.

  • Install Pip for Python 2 on Debian 10

Although Python 2 is no longer actively developed, some legacy projects may still require it. To install Pip for Python 2 on Debian 10 Buster, execute the following command:

sudo apt install python-pip

Once the installation is completed you can verify that it was successful by using the following command:

# pip2 --version
pip 18.1 from /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pip (python 2.7)
  • Install Pip for Python 3 on Debian 10

Run the command below to install Pip for python 3 on Debian 10:

sudo apt install python3-venv python3-pip

Now verify that it was successful by using the following command:

# pip3 --version
pip 18.1 from /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/pip (python 3.7)

Step 3. How to use pip command.

After installing the python-pip package, the pip command will be available on the system. There are multiple options available with pip command:

To install the new python package type:

pip install PackageName

To uninstall python package installed by pip type:

pip uninstall PackageName

To search python package type:
