How To Install Python on Manjaro

Install Python on Manjaro

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Python on Manjaro. Python, with its simplicity, versatility, and vast ecosystem of libraries, has become the go-to language for many developers and programmers. If you’re a Manjaro Linux user, you’re in luck because installing Python on this Arch Linux-based distribution is a straightforward process.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of Python Programming Language on a Manjaro Linux.

Prerequisites

  • A server or desktop running one of the following operating systems: Manjaro, and other Arch-based distributions.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
  • An active internet connection. You’ll need an internet connection to download the necessary packages and dependencies for Python.
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Python on Manjaro

Step 1. Before running the tutorial below, make sure that our system is up to date:

sudo pacman -Syu
sudo pacman -S base-devel

Step 2. Installing Python on Manjaro.

  • Method 1: Using the Package Manager

Now that your system is up to date, it’s time to install Python. Manjaro makes this process incredibly easy with its package manager, Pacman. Open your terminal and run the following command:

sudo pacman -S python

To ensure that Python is successfully installed, let’s check its version. In the terminal, type:

python --version

You should see an output similar to this:

Python 3.11.0
  • Method 2: Downloading and Install from the Official Python Website

Open a web browser and go to the official Python website:

wget https://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.11.5/Python-3.11.5.tgz

Extract the contents of the downloaded file by running the following command:

tar -xvf Python-3.11.5.tgz

Navigate to the extracted directory by running the following command:

cd PPython-3.11.5

Configure the installation by running the following command:

./configure --enable-optimizations

Compile and install Python by running the following commands:

make
sudo make install

Verify that Python has been installed correctly by running the following command:

python3 --version

You should see an output similar to this:

Python 3.11.5

Congratulations! You have successfully installed Python. Thanks for using this tutorial to install the latest version of Python Programming Language on the Manjaro system. For additional help or useful information, we recommend you check the official Python website.
