Prerequisites

Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt commands in the terminal.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install curl gnupg2 gnupg wget software-properties-common

Step 2. Installing Python 3.12 on Ubuntu 22.04.

  • Install using the Python PPA (Personal Package Archive) repository.

By default, Python is not available on Ubuntu 22.04 base repository. Now run the following command below to add the Python PPA repository to your Ubuntu system:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:deadsnakes/ppa

After the repository is enabled, now install the latest version of Sublime Text using the below command:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install python3.12

Once installation is complete, be sure to confirm the version of Python installed on your system:

python3.12 --version
  • Install Python 3.12 on Ubuntu from Source.

First, install packages to build Python:

sudo apt install libgdbm-dev build-essential libnss3-dev libreadline-dev libffi-dev libsqlite3-dev libbz2-dev libncurses5-dev libssl-dev zlib1g-dev

Next, we download the source code from the Python download page:

cd /tmp
wget https://www.python.org/ftp/python/3.12.2/Python-3.12.2.tgz

Then, extract the downloaded compressed file:

tar -xf Python-3.12.2.tgz

After that, make files ready for installation and optimize for speed code execution:

cd Python-3.12.2
./configure --enable-optimizations
make -j 6
sudo make install

Confirm that Python 3.12 is installed and the build version by running the following command:

python3.12 --version
