In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Tor Browser on Linux Mint 20. This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Linux Mint 20 (Ulyana).
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install software-properties-common

wget https://www.torproject.org/dist/torbrowser/10.5.2/tor-browser-linux64-10.5.2_en-US.tar.xz

Next, extract the Tar file of download Tor Browser:

tar -xvf tor-browser-linux64-10.5.2_en-US.tar.xz

Step 3. Create a Desktop shortcut for Tor.

Create a desktop shortcut for your browser by using the following command below:

nano ~/Desktop/Tor-browser.desktop

Add the following line:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Tor Browser
Exec=/opt/tor/Browser/./start-tor-browser
Icon=/opt/tor/Browser/browser/chrome/icons/default/default128.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true

After that, make the shortcut executable. You will see a shortcut on your desktop, right-click on that, and select Properties. Then under the Permissions Tab, check the box given for “Allow executing file as program” and then Close it.

Step 4. Accessing the Tor Browser on Linux Mint.

Once successfully installed, now simply double-click on the Desktop shortcut of Tor Browser whenever you want to use it.
