How To Install Anaconda Python on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

Install Anaconda Python on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Anaconda Python on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. For those of you who didn’t know, Anaconda is a totally free, easy-to-install open source Program manager, environment manager, and Python distribution with a collection of 1,000+ open source packages with free community support and is commonly used for large-scale Information processing, scientific computing, and predictive analytics, and serving data scientists, Programmers, business analysts, and People Operating in DevOps.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of Anaconda Python on a Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) server.

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver).
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Anaconda Python on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver

Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt-get commands in the terminal.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Step 2. Installing Anaconda Python on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

Open a terminal and type the following command to install Python 3 Anaconda:

wget https://repo.continuum.io/archive/Anaconda3-5.2.0-Linux-x86_64.sh

Now verify the data integrity of the installer with cryptographic hash verification through the SHA-256 checksum:

sha256sum Anaconda3-5.2.0-Linux-x86_64.sh

Now we can run the script:

bash Anaconda3-5.2.0-Linux-x86_64.sh -b -p ~/anaconda
rm Anaconda3-5.2.0-Linux-x86_64.sh
echo 'export PATH="~/anaconda/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bashrc

In order to activate the installation, you should source the ~/.bashrc file:

source ~/.bashrc
conda update conda
source ~/anaconda/bin/activate root

Congratulations! You have successfully installed Anaconda Python. Thanks for using this tutorial for installing Anaconda Python on your Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) system. For additional help or useful information, we recommend you check the official Anaconda Python website.
