In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Android Studio on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. For those of you who didn’t know, Android Studio is the official Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Android app development, based on IntelliJ IDEA. On top of IntelliJ’s powerful code editor and developer tools, Android Studio offers even more features that enhance your productivity when building Android apps
This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo
‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of Android Studio on an Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) server.
Prerequisites
- A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver).
- It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
- SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
- An active internet connection.
- While the minimum requirement is 3GB of RAM, it’s highly recommended to have at least 8GB of RAM for optimal performance.
- Android Studio and its associated components require a minimum of 2GB of free disk space, but 4GB or more is recommended for a comfortable development experience.

, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.
Install Android Studio on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver
Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt-get
commands in the terminal.
sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade
This ensures you have the latest software versions and security patches installed.
Step 2. Installing Java on Ubuntu.
Before you install Android Studio, you need to have Java installed on your system. If you do not have Java installed, you can follow our guide here.
sudo apt install openjdk-9-jre openjdk-9-jdk
Step 3. Install Android Studio on Ubuntu 18.04.
Run the following commands to add Android Studio PPA and install:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-fonville/android-studio sudo apt update sudo apt install android-studio
Step 4. Launch Android Studio.
Once the installation is finished, You can access the Android studio from the dash or app launcher or use the following command to start:
/opt/android-studio/bin/studio.sh
