How To Install Apache Flink on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Install Apache Flink on Ubuntu 20.04

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Apache Flink on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. For those of you who didn’t know, Apache Flink is a framework and distributed processing engine for stateful computations over unbounded and bounded data streams. Flink has been designed to run in all common cluster environments, and perform computations at in-memory speed and at any scale. Apache Flink provides data-source and sink connectors to systems such as Amazon Kinesis, Apache Kafka, Alluxio, HDFS, Apache Cassandra, and ElasticSearch where Apache Flink does not provide its own data-storage system.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of Apache Flink on Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa). You can follow the same instructions for Ubuntu 18.04, 16.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint.

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 20.04, 18.04, 16.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Now, check that Java is installed on your system or not using the following command:

java --version

Step 3. Installing Apache Flink on Ubuntu 20.04.

wget https://dlcdn.apache.org/flink/flink-1.16.0/flink-1.16.0-bin-scala_2.12.tgz
tar xzf flink-*.tgz

Next, move to flink-1.13.2 the directory inside an extracted directory then submits the executable file to run the local Flink Cluster:

cd flink-1.16.0/
./bin/start-cluster.sh
