How To Install Kitematic on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Kitematic on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. For those of you who didn’t know, Kitematic is an open-source project that makes it easier to start, stop or delete containers by offering a graphical user interface that further makes it relatively easy to select and use containers from the Docker Hub registry.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the Kitematic Docker GUI tool on Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa). You can follow the same instructions for Ubuntu 18.04, 16.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint.

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 20.04, 18.04, 16.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Kitematic on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa

Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt commands in the terminal.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Step 2. Installing Docker.

Before installing Kitematic you have to install docker in your system:

sudo apt install docker

To start docker, just run the command in a terminal:

sudo systemctl start docker
sudo systemctl enable docker

Next, make a group for Docker and allow it the administrative power on your Ubuntu Linux:

sudo groupadd docker
sudo gpasswd -a $USER docker
newgrp docker

Step 3. Installing Kitematic on Ubuntu 20.04.

Now we download the Kitematic installer from the GitHub repository:

wget https://github.com/docker/kitematic/releases/download/v0.17.13/Kitematic-0.17.13-Ubuntu.zip
sudo unzip Kitematic-0.17.13-Ubuntu.zip

Now let’s run the command to install Kitematic .deb package:

sudo apt install -f
sudo dpkg -i Kitematic-0.17.13_amd64.deb

Step 4. Accessing Kitematic on Ubuntu.

Once the Kitematic is installed successfully on your Ubuntu system, you can now log in to your Docker account using the Docker username and password. You can run, stop, restart, and exit Docker images from the graphical panel of Kitematic. Docker resources and the Docker engine can also be maintained from the Kitematic dashboard.
