How To Install Kontact on Debian 11

Install Kontact on Debian 11

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Kontact on Debian 11. For those of you who didn’t know, Kontact is a powerful and versatile personal information manager that provides users with a range of tools for managing their personal data. Its seamless integration, customization options, security features, and backup and restore tools make it a reliable and convenient solution for managing personal information on Linux.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the Kontact on a Debian 11 (Bullseye).

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Debian 11.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
  • An active internet connection. You’ll need an internet connection to download the necessary packages and dependencies for Kontact.
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Kontact on Debian 11 Bullseye

Step 1. Before we install any software, it’s important to make sure your system is up to date by running the following apt commands in the terminal:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install software-properties-common apt-transport-https wget ca-certificates

Step 2. Installing Kontact on Debian 11.

  • Method 1. Install Kontact from the Debian Repository √

By default, Kontact is available on the Debian 11 base repository. Now run the following command below to install the Kontact package to your Debian system:

sudo apt install kontact

The package manager will download and install the necessary packages for Kontact. This process may take some time depending on your internet speed.

  • Method 2. Install Kontact using Flatpak √

Flatpak is a package manager that allows you to install and run Linux applications in a sandboxed environment. It is a popular alternative to traditional package managers and allows you to easily install software that may not be available in the official Debian repository.

If you have not already installed Flatpak on your Debian 11 system, you can install it by typing the following command:

sudo apt install flatpak

Kontact is available on Flathub, which is a repository of Flatpak packages. To install Kontact from Flathub, you need to add the Flathub repository to your system:

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

To install Kontact from Flathub, type the following command in the terminal and press Enter:

flatpak install flathub org.kde.kontact

For additional resources on installing Flatpak, read the post below:

Step 3. Accessing Kontact on Debian Linux.

Once successfully installed, fonts will be available in most applications now, but you can confirm by launching the Kontact application located in Activities -> Show Applications -> Kontact. Alternatively, you can easily launch Kontact from the Terminal by executing the following command:

kontact

For Flatpak users, you’ll need to launch Kontact with a slightly different command in a terminal instance:

flatpak install flathub org.kde.kontact
