How To Install Nginx Mainline Version on Debian 9

Install Nginx Mainline Version on Debian 9

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Nginx Mainline Version on your Debian 9. For those of you who didn’t know, Nginx has two primary repositories or branches that folks can use to install or update Nginx packages. When you install Nginx from Debian default repositories, you’re installing Nginx from the stable repository.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the Nginx Mainline Version on a Debian 9 (Stretch) server.

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Debian 9.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Nginx Mainline Version on Debian 9 Stretch

Step 1. Before we install any software, it’s important to make sure your system is up to date by running the following apt-get commands in the terminal:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Step 2. Installing Nginx mainline version on the Debian server.

First, we are going to download the Nginx repository authentication key:

wget http://nginx.org/keys/nginx_signing.key

Then run the command below to install the repository key:

apt-key add nginx_signing.key

Now remove the downloaded Nginx authentication key from the root directory:

rm nginx_signing.key

Next, we will need to add the official Nginx repository:

nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Next, append the following two lines at the end of the file:

deb http://nginx.org/packages/mainline/debian/ stretch nginx
deb-src http://nginx.org/packages/mainline/debian/ stretch nginx

Run the commands below to install Nginx:

apt-get update
apt-get install nginx

Check the Nginx version:

$ nginx -v
nginx version: nginx/1.13.8

Start Nginx and add it to automatically start on your system start-up using:

systemctl restart nginx
systemctl enable nginx

You can verify that Nginx is really running by opening your favorite web browser and entering the URL http://your-IP-server's-address, if it is installed, then you will see this:
