Install VLC Media Player on Ubuntu 14.04

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install of VLC media player on your Ubuntu 14.04. For those of you who didn’t know, VLC (VideoLan) is a portable & and open source multimedia player available for Linux-like operating systems, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and android. VLC plays our favorite audio and video files, it can play various audio & video formats such as MPEG, DivX, MOV, mp3, mp4, DVD, VCD, WMV, and QuickTime.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of VLC Media Player on Ubuntu 14.04.

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 14.04, and any other Debian-based distribution.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install VLC Media Player on Ubuntu 14.04

Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt commands in the terminal.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Step 2. Installing VLC Player on Ubuntu system.

Now install VLC using apt-get the command:

VLC is included in the base repositories of the Debian-based system, so installing VLC is straightforward with apt-get:

sudu apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

Step 3. Install the VLC Mozilla plugin in Ubuntu.

Now we run the following command to install VLC plugins:

sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin mozilla-plugin-vlc

We can also play audio and video files from the command Line using VLC. An example is shown below:

[root@idroot.us ~]# vlc latest-songs.mp3
[root@idroot.us ~]# vlc tv-serial.mp4
[root@idroot.us ~]# vlc Fast7.avi
[root@idroot.us ~]# vlc dream-theater-video.mov
