How To Install Git on AlmaLinux 8

Install Git on AlmaLinux 8

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Git on AlmaLinux 8. For those of you who didn’t know, Git is a distributed version control system. Git is free software designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency. Git offers features like data assurance, workflows, creating branches, reverting to the previous stage, incredible speed, keeping track of your code changes, view logs, and many more. It allows you to perform your work in offline mode and when ready, you need the internet connection to publish the changes and take the latest changes.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you through the step-by-step installation of Git on an AlmaLinux 8.

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: AlmaLinux 8.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Git on AlmaLinux 8

Step 1. First, let’s start by ensuring your system is up-to-date.

sudo dnf update
sudo dnf install epel-release

Step 2. Installing Git on AlmaLinux 8.

Git is available on the default repository on Almalinux. Now run the following command to install it:

sudo dnf install git

Confirm the installation and check the version executing the following command:

git --version

Add initial configuration:

git config --global user.name "YourName"
git config --global user.email "name@your-domain.com"

List the configuration you just set:

$ git config --list
user.name=YourName
user.email=name@your-domain.com

Once successfully installed, there’s some short configuration you’ll need to do, then you can get started with creating your own repositories, or cloning those that already exist.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed Git. Thanks for using this tutorial for installing Git on your AlmaLinux 8 system. For additional help or useful information, we recommend you check the official Git website.
