How To Install Microsoft Teams on Debian 11

Install Microsoft Teams on Debian 11

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Microsoft Teams on Debian 11. For those of you who didn’t know, Microsoft Teams is a Microsoft communication platform that allows users to chat, conduct meetings, collaborate and call. Although many in the Linux community will balk at using software solutions that aren’t open-source, this is a game-changer for anyone wanting to use Linux and is required to collaborate via Microsoft Teams.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you through the step-by-step installation of the Microsoft Teams on a Debian 11 (Bullseye).

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Debian 11 (Bullseye).
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Step 1. Before we install any software, it’s important to make sure your system is up to date by running the following apt commands in the terminal:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Step 2. Installing Microsoft Teams on Debian 11.

By default, Microsoft Teams is not available on Debian 11 base repository. Now we add the official Microsoft Teams repository to your system:

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/ms-teams stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/teams.list'

Next, import the GPG key:

curl https://packages.microsoft.com/keys/microsoft.asc | sudo apt-key add -

Finally, update the apt packages and install them using the following command:

sudo apt updatesudo apt install teams

Step 3. Accessing Microsoft Teams on Debian.

Once successfully installed, you can launch it from the application menu and enjoy it. You can access all the same features available with the app on Windows 10, including chat, video meetings, calling, and collaboration on Office documents from your Microsoft 365 and business processes within a single interface.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed Microsoft Teams. Thanks for using this tutorial for installing the latest version of Microsoft Teams on Debian 11 Bullseye. For additional help or useful information, we recommend you check the official Microsoft Teams website.
