How To Install Percona on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

Install Percona on Ubuntu 22.04

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Percona on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Percona Server is a powerful and reliable open-source database management system that provides high performance, scalability, and security for enterprise-level applications. It is a drop-in replacement for MySQL and offers several advanced features such as advanced storage engines, thread pooling, and query optimization. If you are looking for a reliable and efficient database management system for your business needs, Percona Server is definitely worth considering.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the database on Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish). You can follow the same instructions for Ubuntu 22.04 and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Pop!_OS, and more as well.

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 22.04, 20.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • An active internet connection. You’ll need an internet connection to download the necessary packages and dependencies for Percona.
  • SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Percona on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish

Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt commands in the terminal.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Step 2. Installing Percona on Ubuntu 22.04.

By default, Percona is not available on Ubuntu 22.04 base repository. Bow run the following command below to add the Percona repository to your system:

sudo add-apt-repository -y 'deb http://repo.percona.com/apt focal main'

Next, import the GPG key by running the following command:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-keys 8507EFA5

After adding the repository and importing the GPG key, you can now install Percona Server by running the following command:

sudo apt install percona-server-server-8.0

Step 3. Secure Percona Server.

Percona provides a security script that can be used to secure your Percona Server installation. You can run the security script by running the following command:

sudo mysql_secure_installation

This script will prompt you to configure some basic security settings for your Percona Server installation. Follow the prompts and set a strong root password, remove anonymous users, disallow remote root login, and remove the test database.

Step 4. Configure Percona Server.

After installation, you can configure the Percona Server by editing the configuration file mysqld.cnf. The configuration file is located at /etc/mysql/percona-server.conf.d/mysqld.cnf. To edit the configuration file, run the following command:

nano /etc/mysql/percona-server.conf.d/mysqld.cnf

You can modify various settings like buffer size, thread stack size, max connections, etc., in this file. After making the changes, you need to restart the Percona Server to apply the new configurations. To do so, run the following command:

sudo systemctl restart mysql

If you encounter any issues while starting the Percona Server, you can check the error log file located at /var/log/mysql/error.log.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed Percona. Thanks for using this tutorial for installing the Percona database on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish system. For additional help or useful information, we recommend you check the official Percona website.
