How To Install Java JDK 9 on Ubuntu 15.04

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Java JDK 9 on Ubuntu 15.04. For those of you who didn’t know, Java is a programming language and computing platform. It was first released by Sun Microsystems in 1995. Many programs and scripts require Java to run, but usually, Java are not installed by default on a VPS or Dedicated Server.

Prerequisites

• A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 15.04, and any other Debian-based distribution.
• It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
• SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
• A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Java JDK 9 on Ubuntu 15.04

Step 1. Remove the OpenJDK from the system, if you have it already installed.

sudo apt-get remove --purge openjdk*

Step 2. Add the webupd8team Java PPA repository to your system.

ssudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java

Step 3. Install Java JDK 9.

After adding the PPA, run the commands below one by one to install Java:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java9-installer

Once the script successfully installs Java 9 on your system, you may run the command to set ava 9 environment variables:

sudo apt-get install oracle-java9-set-default

Step 4. Verify Installed Java Version.

Run the following command to verify the version of your Java:

java -version

Result:

java version "1.9.0-ea"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.9.0-ea-b50)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.9.0-ea-b50, mixed mode)
