How To Install Discord on AlmaLinux 9

Install Discord on AlmaLinux 9

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Discord on AlmaLinux 9. For those of you who didn’t know, Discord is a VoIP and instant messaging social platform that allows users to communicate through voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media sharing, and file transfers. Originally popular among gamers, Discord has evolved into a versatile platform for communities of all types. It combines the functionality of IRC-style chat with Teamspeak-style voice communication, making it ideal for both casual conversations and professional collaboration.

Discord runs on multiple platforms including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, iPadOS, Linux, and web browsers. As of 2021, the service has over 350 million registered users and over 150 million monthly active users.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the Discord on AlmaLinux 9. You can follow the same instructions for CentOS and Rocky Linux.

Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: AlmaLinux 9.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • SSH access to the server (or just open Terminal if you’re on a desktop).
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Step 1. Update Your System.

First, let’s start by ensuring your system is up-to-date.

Next, extract the downloaded file:

sudo mkdir /usr/share/discord
sudo tar -xf discord-*.tar.gz -C /usr/share/discord --strip-component 1

Step 3. Create Desktop and Launcher Discord Shortcuts.

The desktop shortcut file for Discord is already present in its extracted folder, simply copy it to its rightful place. Here are the commands to do that:
