In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Kate Editor on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. For those of you who didn’t know, The Kate Text Editor is an open-source and free text editor application that stands for KDE Advanced Text Editor. Kate lets you edit and view many files at the same time, both in tabs and split views, and comes with a wide variety of plugins, including an embedded terminal that lets you launch console commands directly from Kate. Kate editor is a cross-platform application available for Linux, macOS & Microsoft Windows, It is available for both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. Prerequisites

  • A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 20.04, 18.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint or elementary OS.
  • It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.
  • A non-root sudo user or access to the root user. We recommend acting as a non-root sudo user, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.

Install Kate Editor on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa

Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt commands in the terminal.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Step 2. Installing Kate Editor on Ubuntu 20.04.

  • Install Kate Editor from the default Ubuntu repository.

By default, Kate Editor is available Ubuntu 20.04 base repository. Now run the following command below to install the latest version of Kate Editor:

sudo apt install kate
  • Install Kate Editor using Snap.

Run the following command below to install Snap packages manager to your Ubuntu:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install snapd

To install kate, simply use the following command:

sudo snap install kate --classic

Verify Kate editor installation:

kate --version

Step 3. Accessing Kate Editor on Ubuntu.

Once successfully installed, now go to Applications and you will find the Kate icon, click on it to run or you can access its terminal by executing the command below:

kate
