How To Install Sublime Text on Debian 9 Stretch

Install Sublime Text on Debian 9 Stretch

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Sublime Text on Debian 9 Stretch. For those of you who didn’t know, Sublime Text is a cross-platform text and source code editor with a Python API. It is a sophisticated text editor for code, markup, and prose. Its functionality is extendable with plugins. Most of the extending packages have free software licenses and are community-built and maintained.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you through the step-by-step installation of Sublime Text on a Debian 9 (Stretch) server.

Install Sublime Text on Debian 9 Stretch

Step 1. Before we install any software, it’s important to make sure your system is up to date by running the following apt-get commands in the terminal:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Step 2. Installing Sublime Text on Debian 9.

First import the GPG key on your system:

wget -qO - https://download.sublimetext.com/sublimehq-pub.gpg | sudo apt-key add -

Next, add the Sublime text apt PPA to your system using the following command:

echo "deb https://download.sublimetext.com/ apt/stable/" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/sublime-text.list

Once you’ve added the repo you can go ahead and run an update and install the app:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install sublime-text

When the installation is complete, use system navigation menubar to access Sublime Text editor.
