In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Ionic Framework on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. For those of you who didn’t know, Ionic Framework is helpful for building Android and iOS programs faster. You must install those applications to create a hybrid mobile application.
This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo
‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you through the step-by-step installation of Ionic Framework on Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa). You can follow the same instructions for Ubuntu 18.04, 16.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint.
Prerequisites
- A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 20.04, 18.04, 16.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint.
- It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.

non-root sudo user
or access to theroot user
. We recommend acting as anon-root sudo user
, however, as you can harm your system if you’re not careful when acting as the root.
Install Ionic Framework on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa
Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt
commands in the terminal.
sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade
Step 2. Installing Node.js.
Run the following commands to install NPM and Node.js on your Ubuntu system:
curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_12.x | sudo -E bash - sudo apt install nodejs
Step 3. Installing Cordova.
To install Cordova in our server globally using the following npm command. It will install all other required node modules on your system:
sudo npm install -g cordova
Step 4. Installing Ionic Framework on Ubuntu 20.04.
Run the below NPM command to install the Ionic framework on your system:
sudo npm i -g @ionic/cli
After completing the installation of the Ionic Framework, verify the version of the Ionic Framework using the following command:
$ ionic -v 6.10.1
Step 5. Create Application with Ionic Framework.
First, create a new Cordova project on your computer using the following command:
ionic start HelloMey blank
Now use one of the following commands to enable iOS or Android platform:
ionic platform add ios ionic platform add android
