In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Sublime Text on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. For those of you who didn’t know, Sublime Text is a cross-platform text and source code editor with a Python API. It is a sophisticated text editor for code, markup, and prose. Its functionality is extendable with plugins. Most of the extending packages have free software licenses and are community-built and maintained.
This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo
‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you through the step-by-step installation of Sublime Text 3 on Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa). You can follow the same instructions for Ubuntu 18.04, 16.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint.
Prerequisites
- A server running one of the following operating systems: Ubuntu 20.04, 18.04, and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint or elementary OS.
- It’s recommended that you use a fresh OS install to prevent any potential issues.

Install Sublime Text on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa
Step 1. First, make sure that all your system packages are up-to-date by running the following apt
commands in the terminal.
sudo apt update sudo apt upgrade sudo apt install dirmngr gnupg apt-transport-https ca-certificates software-properties-common
Step 2. Installing Sublime Text on Ubuntu 20.04.
Method 1: Install Sublime Text From Official Repository.
Installing Sublime on Ubuntu is fairly straightforward, Now we import the repository’s GPG key and the Sublime APT repository:
curl -fsSL https://download.sublimetext.com/sublimehq-pub.gpg | sudo apt-key add - sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://download.sublimetext.com/ apt/stable/"
Once you’ve added the repo you can go ahead and run an update and install the app:
sudo apt install sublime-text

Step 3. Accessing Sublime Text on Ubuntu.
Once the installation is complete you can launch the app from your desktop app launcher or start Sublime Text editor on your Ubuntu 20.04 system open up a terminal and enter:
subl
